Polio loomed over the early 20th century. While polio was asymptomatic up to 99% of the time, it caused paralysis and “iron lung” breathing machines were used to keep sufferers alive. FDR contracted polio and still went on to become President. The great scientist Jonas Salk developed the first polio vaccine in the 1950s.
